The Sturdy Doghouse: The Easiest Way to Learn Real Construction Skills (And Make Your Dog Very Happy)

At Mended Oak Design & Engineering, we love dogs—and we love giving people the confidence to build. The Sturdy Doghouse brings those two worlds together. When you order this plan set, you’re getting full architectural and structural drawings for—yes—a doghouse. It also happens to be the easiest plan we offer, proudly rated 1 on the Mended Oak Difficulty Scale.

A Real Construction Experience (Just Smaller with Less Risk)

Follow the plans and you’ll build a sturdy, well‑designed doghouse. We’d call it fully compliant with the 2023 Florida Building Code, but we did skip a few human‑only requirements like ceiling height and minimum door widths. Still, the process mirrors real home construction. You’ll work with the same tools, materials, and blueprint‑style drawings you’d use on a full‑size house.

This makes The Sturdy Doghouse the perfect low‑risk way to learn:
•     How framing works
•     How to read construction drawings
•     How materials come together in the field
•     What YouTube can teach you—and what it can’t
•     What kind of contractors you might need when you’re ready to build a real home

Build It Your Way
You can choose the foundation style that fits your budget and skill level:
•     Concrete slab: A full build‑out with a small concrete pad and all the trimmings runs about $700 in materials - about $44 per square foot - which is on par for material cost for a real house.
•     Wood pier foundation: A solid, durable option that brings the material cost down to around $550 by removing the need for concrete and steel.
•     Framing‑only build: Skip the concrete, the interior drywall, insulation, exterior siding, and all trim, and you can complete the structural shell for roughly $175 in material costs.

The structure itself is wood‑framed, with platform framing on the sides and balloon framing at the gable ends. Once the frame is up, the plans call for roofing underlayment, shingles, house wrap, finishes, and there's even a tiny electrical layout. Or, if you prefer, you can stop at the shell and still gain meaningful hands‑on experience.

A Perfect Weekend or Family Project
This is the kind of project that brings people together. It’s approachable, fun, and incredibly satisfying to complete. Everything you need is available at Lowe’s, Home Depot, 84 Lumber, or your favorite local supplier. Find out how well you work together.

Whether you’re testing the waters before building a home, teaching kids how construction works, or just giving your dog a place to call their own, The Sturdy Doghouse is a project that pays off in skills, confidence, and wagging tails.

Your Dog Will Love the Upgrade... unless, your dog is like our dog, he will always prefer a nice, cushioned chair.  So, there's that.

But when you’re done, you won’t just have a practice build under your belt—you’ll have a solid, well‑designed structure.  We hope your dog enjoys it, too!
